We want to hear from you! What were your favorite 2017 films?
Every other month, The Grand Cinema hosts a special Science on Screen event, pairing a film with a scientific presentation. For our June 12 Science on Screen, we connected with Korean astronaut Soyeon Yi to present before the film Hidden Figures. Once we started promoting the program, the Tacoma Action Collective reached out, sharing that by not including African American women in our presentation, we were excluding and erasing their contributions. We realized we had made a serious mistake and that we must make a change. Here's how we worked with the Tacoma Action Collective to right this wrong:
The Grand Cinema’s donors and supporters accomplished a lot in 2016. At the beginning of the year, we defined three guiding annual priorities - supporting our general operations, growing educational opportunities and the Tacoma Film Festival, and upgrading the in-theater experience - and throughout the year, we reached out to our community with opportunities to support. Read on to learn more about what we did together!
At the end of each year we ask you to consider a meaningful donation to help keep the nonprofit Grand Cinema growing and thriving.
Every year we like to use this opportunity to connect with our supporters, to learn more about why they love The Grand, and to share those perspectives. This year, we sat down with volunteers, board members, and staff to hear their stories. Through December, you will here from Van, Winnie, Heather, Bernadette, Katy, Jason, Ken, Lu, and Christopher in our theaters and on social media, sharing why they care about the work of The Grand Cinema.
Read on to learn how you can give back today too!
Why supporting The Grand Cinema through annual membership is awesome and worth every penny (and then some).
The relationship between The Grand and its members is symbiotic: members see films on our screens that are hard to find elsewhere, and enjoy all the extra bonuses that come along with membership. In return The Grand is able to keep providing high quality film art and programs to the Tacoma community. It’s a win-win.
To all those readers who are already members: thank you and please keep it up! And to anyone who has been wondering what membership at The Grand is all about, keep reading to learn what you get from becoming an active part of The Grand’s community.
Some of our Tacoma Film Festival films and events are definitely getting some attention - read on to learn what you should grab tickets for sooner than later.
Recently, Grand Cinema volunteer and local filmmaker Christopher Wood led a post-film discussion for the documentary Weiner, which was featured as part of our Tuesday Film Series. Read about his experience and make sure to make some time to join in an upcoming post-film discussion at The Grand too!
The Grand Cinema is a proud partner of Tacoma’s annual Pride festival, bringing the cinematic art of storytelling front and center. This year we are sharing LGBTQA stories of youth, creativity, and families - stories of discovery, identity, love, and expression.
Beyond the great content of our featured Pride films, we’re also inviting you to get inspired and to connect with our community through two very special events. Here’s what we’re doing for our 2016 Pride Film Series:
