Controversy-courting director Michael Haneke (CACHé) earned the Palm d’Or at Cannes in 2009 and the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for this arresting drama set just before World War I. In a small German village, a number of unexplained accidents beset the schoolchildren and their parents. Though they at first appear coincidental, it begins to seem that they are not, in fact, accidents at all.
A Prophet April 2
At age 18, Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim) is just beginning a six-year prison sentence in this drama from director Jacques Audiard. Though he cannot read or write, Malik soon figures out the politics of the prison system, giving him a prime spot in the power struggle between two battling groups of prisoners. Nominated for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Foreign Film!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo April 9
Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. Based on the wildly popular novel of the same title.

Call to movie enthusiasts!
The Grand Cinema is seeking to expand their network of film enthusiasts to lead weekend film discussions! They are scheduled almost every weekend that a new film opens at the Grand Cinema. Many of the films that come to the Grand are of special interest, or fill specific niches (i.e. foreign language, religious, historical, etc.), and discussions for such films are that much more exciting if an expert facilitates the conversation (though this is not a requirement to be a discussion leader). These events are a staple at the Grand Cinema, and a favorite of the many patrons that support us. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the film and arts community. If you love movies and are interested in possibly facilitating a discussion or two, please email Emily Alm at emily@grandcinema.com. Once you are on our list, you'll receive emails about the upcoming film and scheduled discussions; it is then up to you to choose the films that interest you most. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!
