You Are the Film
<div><div>Madoka is a playwright in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, and Kazuma is a band member in the neighboring town of Sangenjaya. One day, in their own separate lives, they decide to go and see a movie at Tollywood, an independent cinema. In the movie they each see, they see the other person on the screen. In other words, to Madoka, Kazuma is the "film" she is watching, and to Kazuma, Madoka is the "film" he is watching. In this impossible structure, incidents occur within each other's stories, just like in a film. Now, Kazuma and Madoka must communicate through the screen and work together to solve the problems that arise in their respective stories.</div><div><br></div><div>By the time it reaches its conclusion, you’ll feel exhilarated, moved, and tickled. <i>You Are the Film </i>nimbly balances playful physical comedy and character nuance with engagingly philosophical soul-searching and mindbending genre subversion, something writer/director Makoto Ueda has experience with; in addition to adapting <i>The Night is Short, Walk On Girl </i>to feature film success, he’s also the scribe behind <i>Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes</i> (2020) and <i>River </i>(2023), two time-twisting, ensemble-based, microbudget science-fiction delights that have become cherished cult hits. (In fact,<i> Beyond</i> premiered at the very cinema featured in this film!)
