A People's History of North American Music
What is North American music, and who gets to say? Eric Isaacson, founder and store owner of Mississippi Records, is brave enough to attempt an answer in a 90-minute live extravaganza!
Blending archival film, sound clips, and live lecture, Isaacson peels back master narratives of corporations and superstars to unearth personal, underground, and even absurd stories that coalesce into the PEOPLE’S history of North American music. From the Puritan settlers’ bizarre vision of a utopian musicless society, to how the Church of Scientology saved the record industry, to the dystopian world of Spotify and AI music—a new narrative emerges around real individuals and communities preserving the independence and vitality of their musical culture, despite the American commodification machine’s best efforts at control. Don’t worry, there’s hope at the end!
Music heads, fans of documentarians Adam Curtis or Werner Herzog, and Radiolab subscribers will love Isaacson’s engaging whirlwind of music, images, and wild stories that seek the macro through the micro, and locate the micro in the macro.
Eric Isaacson is the founder and store owner of Mississippi Records—vital but often overlooked music made accessible through quality and affordable records and tapes, with respect to artists and their vision. Eric will be selling records from the label in the lobby before and after the screening. Presented in collaboration with Last Letter Bookstore.
