The Grand Cinema Audio Upgrade Project

The Grand Cinema, The South Sound's nonprofit home for independent, foreign, and local cinema, is upgrading its sound system. Help The Grand Cinema amp up its audio systems and raise the boom in our rooms!

We are running this campaign through power2give.org because, with their help, we can partner with ArtsFund and receive a .50 cent match for every dollar we raise online. 

There are also a lot of fun perks for supporting our project: at different donor levels you can enjoy private screenings, parties, and cool opportunities to sign the new speakers!

Why does The Grand need new gear?

Some of our surround speakers have not been upgraded since they were installed in the late 1990s. Many of them were not intended to be cinema speakers at all.

Initially, The Grand's founders put in surround speakers that were inexpensive but frankly not up to cinema industry standards. We need subwoofers in three theaters and amplifiers to support them. We are also putting rear surround speakers in all of our theaters to enhance their sonic fields.

With these much-needed upgrades, we can truly honor every filmmakers' vision by presenting their work as it was intended: with rich, nuanced, immersive sound quality!

What will The Grand pay for?

The Grand Cinema will purchase audio gear for the fourth theater, pay for the labor to install and adjust the gear in all of the theaters, and cover the taxes and Power2Give administrative fee*.

What will be different after the equipment is installed?

After the audio upgrade is complete, we expect a huge difference in the clarity and quality of our audio reproduction.

Our lows will be lower, dialogue more crisp, and sounds will truly surround you!

This essential upgrade will benefit The Grand's amazing donors, members, and patrons for years to come.

We screen first run art house and independent movies to the delight of our 6800+ members and hundreds of thousands of patrons from Pierce County and beyond. We also present the annual Tacoma Film Festival, host film discussions and forums, and connect aspiring filmmakers and critics to the art of film through our film camps and clubs.

All of these events and opportunities need high quality sound for the best theater experience possible.
