One Sings, the Other Doesn't

In the wake of France’s legalization of abortion, New Wave godmother Varda’s One Sings, The Other Doesn’t presents a sweeping ode to female friendship and motherhood. When 17-year-old Pauline stumbles into a photographer’s studio and recognizes a portrait of former neighbor Suzanne, the two connect immediately and begin a decades-spanning, long-lasting friendship, united by their mutual goal of reproductive liberation. A musical feminist fantasy that reminds us of our own domestic reproductive debates.
