Honoree: Tom Rosenberg
Tom Rosenberg is a filmmaker based in Austin, Texas. His films usually look at people trying to manage anxieties arising from trauma and extreme violence. His work has won awards and screened internationally at film festivals including HotDocs, The Viennale, CPH:DOX, Art of the Real, and Locarno. He also loves surfing.

1. NOTHING HUMAN
17 min | Private investigator Louie Akin relates his experience reconstructing the 2009 mass shootings at Fort Hood and reflects on the nature of violence.

2. REHEARSAL
11 min | A surreal study of a simulated terrorist attack in middle America. Composed frames observe the meticulous care taken to create a hyperreal terrorist event. Once the bomb goes off, hundreds of volunteers deliver a convincing performance as stunned and mutilated blast victims.

3. YOU DON’T KNOW ME
12 min | Eccentric Texas preacher Ace Elliot lives alone in a colorful cabin next to I-35, one of the USA’s largest thoroughfares. His property is covered with dozens of bright, homemade signs bearing messages of apocalypse and redemption. Although thousands of drivers pass him everyday, few stop to hear him preach. Ace opens up about his past, and then performs an Elvis song.

Honoree: Ben Petrie
Ben Petrie is a Canadian independent filmmaker. Recently, he wrote, directed, edited and performed in ‘Her Friend Adam,’ which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and proceeded to screen as part of SXSW, Rooftop Films, and across North America as part of the Sundance Short Film Tour. He is currently writing his first feature.

4. HER FRIEND ADAM
17 min | A boyfriend’s jealous impulse spirals out of control in 16 minutes of romantic doom.
