Lean on Pete
CAST: Steve Buscemi, Travis Fimmel, Chloe Sevigny, Charlie Plummer, Thomas Mann, Steve Zahn DIRECTOR: Andrew Haigh ENDS 5/10
Charley Thompson is a 15-year-old who has no stability in his life. He wants a home, food on the table and a high school he can attend for more than part of a year. But as the son of a single father who works in warehouses, finding some stability is hard. Hoping for a new start, they move to Portland where Charley takes a summer job and becomes best friends with a failing racehorse named Lean on Pete.
Plummer's performance is remarkably interior, bottled up behind his brimming wide eyes, and Haigh leaves enough space for the emotional weight of all that Charley is forced to process.Chloe Lizotte, Film Comment Magazine
What should be desperately hard-going is rendered anything but by Haigh's delicate directorial style, an approach complemented by Plummer's appealingly understated performance.Emma Simmonds, The List
I grimly admired the crushing way that it sidesteps romantic baloney at almost every turn, including subverting whatever assumptions we might have about the ultimate role Buscemi's surrogate father figure might play.A.A. Dowd, AV Club
