Think & Drink: One Click Away – Hate and the Internet

November 18th 7:00pm

think and drink

Presented by Humanities Washington & Information School at the University of Washington

Has the internet made hate more infectious? Personalized feeds and sophisticated algorithms can direct us to content and communities that reinforce our most radical ideas and worst impulses — and dare us to act on them.

A rise in hate groups, coupled with multiple mass shootings that incubated in dark online corners, has raised urgent questions: How has the web affected how we treat one another? Despite the benefits of a connected world, is the internet built for hate?

From trolling to White Nationalism, join us to explore the mechanics of online hate, the responsibilities of tech companies and governments, and what we should — and shouldn’t do — to try to stem the tide.

Featuring Anna Lauren Hoffmann, University of Washington professor at the iSchool; and Marnie Ritchie and Sergia Hay, professors at Pacific Lutheran University. Presented in partnership with the iSchool at the University of Washington, Grand Cinema, and Blue Vespers.

Event is free and open to the public.
