2019 TFF Opening Night

Celebrate Opening Night of the 14th annual Tacoma Film Festival at the Pantages Theater with a community event screening of the 2019 docu-thriller THE INFILTRATORS, in partnership with local immigrant rights and anti-deportation organizations.

Doors open at 6 PM. Arrive early to enjoy refreshments and meet film fans, filmmakers, and community groups before the film.

In THE INFILTRATORS, directors Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera present a hybrid cinematic language, combining familiar documentary form and scripted narrative to create a new, electrifying kind of storytelling; this part thriller, part documentary style is emblematic of the innovative storytelling for which TFF has come to be known.

The film presents the stunning true story of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of young undocumented activists who, in 2012, deliberately get themselves arrested by ICE in order to infiltrate a for-profit Florida detention center and help rescue fellow undocumented immigrants being held there. This story of courage and resistance galvanizes as it exposes the injustices of America’s broken deportation system.

Matt Martinez (Director of Content for KNKX) will facilitate a discussion with director Alex Rivera after the film, including an audience Q&A.

Hear from local immigrant rights and anti-deportation activists and organizations in a resource-sharing reception before and after the film.

For the first time, the Tacoma Film Festival will kick off in the historic and beautiful downtown Tacoma Pantages Theater thanks to our partnership with Tacoma Arts Live.

Cristina Ibarra is a brown border crosser and an award-winning independent filmmaker with roots along the Texas/Mexico border. Her new film, THE INFILTRATORS, a hybrid documentary and scripted narrative, received the NEXT Audience and Innovator Awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The New York Times calls her previous documentary, LAS MARTHAS, “a striking alternative portrait of border life”. It premiered on Independent Lens in 2014 and was awarded the Best US Latino Film by Cinema Tropical. US Today describes THE LAST CONQUISTADOR, her feature documentary collaboration that premiered on POV in 2008, as “heroic”. Her directorial debut, DIRTY LAUNDRY: A HOMEMADE TELENOVELA, was broadcast on PBS. She is a 2019 Soros Art and a Rauschenberg fellow.

Alex Rivera is a filmmaker who has been telling new, urgent, and visually adventurous Latino stories for more than twenty years. His first feature film, SLEEP DEALER, won multiple awards at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. Rivera’s second feature film, THE INFILTRATORS, won both the Audience Award and the Innovators Award in the NEXT section of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. His work has been supported by the Ford Foundation, the Tribeca Film Institute, Time Warner, Creative Capital, and many others. Alex studied at Hampshire College, was the Rothschild Lecturer at Harvard University, and is currently a Visiting Professor of Media Studies at Queens College.
