The Season for Movie Lovers spring_2018

Springtime is truly the season of the cinephile.

Awards season has come and gone, studio blockbusters still have a month or two before they come into full swing, and instead, some truly strange and beautiful film masterpieces are released. These films tend to be unapologetic, idiosyncratic, surprising; they hold their own.

Our stellar Film Festival Director/Programmer, Laura, selected the best of the best of the best films from the nearly 1800 film submissions we had this year! Learning from our community: Why we changed our Science on Screen Hidden Figures program Hidden Figures

Every other month, The Grand Cinema hosts a special Science on Screen event, pairing a film with a scientific presentation. For our June 12 Science on Screen, we connected with Korean astronaut Soyeon Yi to present before the film Hidden Figures. Once we started promoting the program, the Tacoma Action Collective reached out, sharing that by not including African American women in our presentation, we were excluding and erasing their contributions. We realized we had made a serious mistake and that we must make a change. Here's how we worked with the Tacoma Action Collective to right this wrong:
