Join us in celebrating the Tacoma Art Museum's 75th Anniversary Celebration, Shall We Dance with 2 special screenings of the classic musical, TOP HAT!
One of the best of the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musicals, Top Hat centers on a typical mistaken-identity plot, with wealthy Dale Tremont (Rogers), on holiday in London and Venice, assuming that American entertainer Jerry Travers (Astaire) is the husband of her friend Madge (Helen Broderick) -- who's actually the wife of Jerry's business manager Horace Hardwick (Edward Everett Horton). Complicating matters is Dale's jealous suitor Beddini (Erik Rhodes), whose motto is For the woman the kiss -- for the man the sword. Beddini is disposed of by some last-minute chicanery on the part of Jerry's faithful valet Bates (Eric Blore), paving the way for the happy ending everyone knew was coming from the opening scene.
This 1935 musical finds Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers at the top of their form. -- Don Druker, Chicago Reader
Because we are bound by gravity and the limitations of our bodies, because we live in a world where the news is often bad and the prospects disturbing, there is a need for another world somewhere, a world where Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers live. -- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
All the minor players are such skilled comedians that they are able to extract merriment from this none too original comedy of errors. -- Andre Sennwald, New York Times « hide details |

Holy Moly! After looking at 195 poster submissions, the Grand Cinema is proud to announce the winning poster design for the 2010 Tacoma Film Festival by graphic designer Jason Larche!
It was no easy task selecting this year's winning poster. Entries were received from all over the world (Istanbul, Germany, Colombia), and the talent was incredible. Thank you to the panel of judges along with our loyal Grand Cinema patrons for giving us your feedback that ultimately led to the winning choice.
"The poster is clean, simple and does a good job of mixing film and Tacoma," says Philip Cowan, Grand Cinema's Executive Director. "With so many talented entries it was really difficult choosing just one winner."
Thank you to each and every artist who submitted a design. The Grand Cinema is very lucky to have such great supporters that are willing to share their talent.
About the Artist Jason Larche is a 25-year-old graphic designer and illustrator based in Norwalk, Connecticut. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2008 with a degree in Communications Design, and chose to pursue a career in branding and packaging. He has always had a great appreciation of film, and hopes to further his involvement in the industry. Visit JasonLarche.com to see more.
About the Design My goal with this design was to boldly announce the festival by establishing a reputable and contemporary look. I wanted to convey Tacoma's character in a classical manner through a high-contrast color palette. It was important for me to show my appreciation of traditional film in what has increasingly become a digital art form. « hide details |
