Airplane Movies
Being a film critic while on Terra Firma is ok. For me, it is a normal part of every day life. But it seems that once at 40,000 feet, the film student in me flies right out the window. I don’t even remember what the in flight films were. Something… with somebody… I think they were famous. Oh, but the film was great! What was it again?
I think the fundamental problem with in flight movies is that we are the ultimate captive audience. Where are you going to go? Added to that is the fact that after reading the in flight magazine and the procedure for a water landing, one becomes desperate for something interesting. Anything. Suddenly, five dollar earphones and a pop down screen are your best friends.
The last two weeks have been harrowing at best. I have survived a national disaster and the scariest storm I have ever seen, was evacuated by the Red Cross, witnessed beautiful homes destroyed by colossal landslides, assisted in the rescue efforts of an entire town which was washed away, and the forecast here in Central America is for more rain and storms. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I make it over the mountains to the San Jose airport on Sunday.
So, whatever the in flight films turn out to be, they will be especially wonderful as far as I´m concerned. Because through all of this, I have kept my special Continental Airline earphones safe, waiting for the little screen to pop down and captivate me for a little while.
See you all soon.
